One of my first professional job titles was "Sustaining Engineer". My duties were supporting and enhancing existing products.
- Legacy software must be decoded and tapped into, extending existing functionality while not losing existing functionality.
- Often the documentation of the legacy code is sparse or out of date.
- Part of an enhancement is documenting not only what the new functions are (and how they are coded), but also what was discovered about the legacy structure.
