In this case, just after the last save on a document, I noticed that almost all my desktop icons had changed to the default generic icon. Weird. Opening one of the defaulted ones and clicking change icon showed that the correct icon was available; choosing it worked.
But doing that manually for 100 icons ... hmm, rather not. Resizing the screen, turning off/on my second monitor setting, using the restore desktop icon utility I have .... nope. Time to do a quick backup of recent work! Restarting the computer ...nope. That surprised me, restarting Windows usually seems to cure most ills> Eventually found this technique: Right click on empty desktop space. -> Properties -> Appearance -> Advanced -> Select Icon from pull-down -> note the icon size, change the Icon size (I changed from 32 to 24), select OK, then wait until Windows finishes. This restored my icons; I then changed my icons back to their original 32 size ... voila! Apparently Windows keeps a cache of the icons, and somehow it can get corrupted; the resize operation forces it to refresh its cache. |
